Phone number inquiry

If this isn't allowed here please delete.

I was hoping you guys could assist me with a question. I need to call UK from out of country, and I'm confused how the numbers work. The listed phone number is: 0871 384 1130 in Boston/Lincolnshire. A phone card site I found listed as this needing to go before that number: 011 + 44 + 1205 + Tel #. That would make it 011+44+1205+0871+384+1130. That cannot be right! Which is the right way to do it? Thank you very much^^.

edit: Well, we figured how to do it and get around the 0871 code. Thank you.

i know that america starts 001 not 011 unless they have broken america down into component states when calling abroad, your best chance is to find out the local number of the company instead of trying to call an 0871 number (which i believe is a local freephone number but dont quote me on that)

the extra bits will be to call using the phone card site so you end up using thier rates etc...

Well first off you can save yourself a fortune by dialling not the 0871 number but the actual landline it redirects to which is 01754 820107.

When you are abroad, you need first of all to dial whatever code is required to get a foreign line. In the UK we dial 00, but it does vary from country to country. You need to find out what that is. In the US you dial 011 in Kenya 000 - it changes depending where you are.

Then you simply drop the leading 0 on the UK number, but instead put in the UK dialling code, which is 44

So you will dial 000 44 1754 820 107 if you were in Kenya, 011 44 1754 820 107 if you are in the USA etc.

I'm not sure where you got the "01754 820107"? The place I'm calling is a landline. I'm calling from a prepaid phone card in the USA. Thanks~

0870 and 0871 numbers can cost a fortune to call, as many charge a lot of pence per minute whilst making money for the person who owns the number. This is especially annoying when dialling from a mobile as most mobile contracts do not include such numbers in your contracted minutes. Yet all these numbers do is redirect to a normal landline.

http://www.saynoto0870.com/search.php

Search for the 0871 number on this site and it will tell you the landline number to call, which normally costs a lot less to ring than the 0870 number.

Ooohhh! That's tricky! In the US, toll free numbers start out as: 1-800-xxx-xxx. I will try this, and let you know if it works.

PS: Badger badger badger!

...I called it, and it worked, but the connection was awful and I couldn't understand the man through his accent, and I feel terrible. Could I ask you to call for me? O_o.

That IS a landline (numbers that start 07 are mobiles, numbers that start 01 or 02 are landlines). 0871 is a 'local rate' number designed so that everyone can call it without knowing where in the country they are dialling. 01754 is the code for the area where the actual company you are calling is based, and 01754 820107 is the cheaper/more accessible version of the same number. You are reaching exactly the same switchboard by using it.

From a prepaid card this is very nearly right, but you've missed out three things.

Step 1. Find a US based local number to call, as per the instructions on your calling card.
Step 2. Enter the required information.
Step 3. Dial this number in the format [info]a_pawson has given you here - 011 44 1754 820 107.
Step 4. IGNORE 1205, it's a red herring.

I don't think you can call 08-- numbers from outside the UK at all, to be honest, even with a calling card. It looks like the phone card routes through the 1205 code so the length of the number is probably right, but you're better off looking for a local number to call in place of the 0871 one.

Actually, if you're using this calling card, you need to dial a full local number, not just 1205 + the number you want, as you need to enter a PIN once the call is connected.

I think you can - we phone our own 08XX number (which is based in the UK) all the time from outside the UK, to test the lines.

are you calling from a landline phone or using a prepaid phonecard? because the numbers'd be a smidge bit different. but the phonecard should have instructions...

so landline ;

the 011 is you calling from the US (right?), then 44 for the UK country code, then the number. (i don't know what the 1205 is for there!)
but usually you'd drop the first 0 off the actual number. SO!

011 44 871 384 1130

should work.
but don't break my arms if it doesn't :)
